After the creative concept is agreed upon, I move into the illustration and design phase. The nature of bespoke artwork means that every project is a bit different. I use my experience and expertise to make all the tiny decisions that are needed long the way as I illustrate and create the final artwork and invitation designs. Once I'm happy with the finished product, I present the entire invitation suite to to the client. Although some feedback is allowed at this point to make small tweaks and changes, complex changes (aka changing your mind) requiring new drawings or a different layout will require an additional fee. That is why the research and creative concept phases are so essential.
Once the research is complete and the client feels comfortable that we are aligned on the objectives and overall idea, I move into the creative ideation phase and develop a complete creative concept for their wedding invitation design. This concept includes: a thumbnail sketch of the entire suite of stationery together (to help see the big picture), full sized sketches of each piece (upon approval of the thumbnail sketches), color palette, format specs (size and shape), printing recommendations, and timeline specifics. The purpose of this phase is to align expectations between myself and the client as to what the finished product will be like and to avoid last minute changes. The ability to shift directions and make changes during the concept phase, with feedback from the client, allows the design phase to pass much more productively and to avoid costly changes later on.
The idea of commissioning an artist to create custom artwork for such a momentous occasion can feel daunting to couples, but with more than 15 years experience as a brand and stationery designer, I've developed a process that makes research a key phase of the creative process and is an equal collaboration between the client and myself. I accomplish this process through both written research (a design questionnaire) and visual research (imagery and mood boards), both of which will help ensure a positive outcome. Questions about the event style are best documented in writing to maintain an objective reference point. As well, visual examples will help to inform me just what a bride has in mind when she says their wedding will be "rustic boho."
